Customer Advisory notice – Catalytic Convertor theft
The theft of catalytic converters from cars isn’t a new crime. In fact, a number of police forces around the UK, have already advised owners to take precautions, particularly those who leave their vehicles in vulnerable places. Any car fitted with a catalytic converter could be at risk, but where Toyota is concerned, the second generation Prius model and Auris models have been a particular target for thieves, and with a replacement cost of over £1,200, the Catloc provides worthwhile protection for your vehicle.
What is a catalytic converter?
The catalytic converter is part of the car’s emissions control system. Located close to the engine, it helps to clean up exhaust gases before leaving through the exhaust pipe. Its internal elements react with the gases, breaking them down into less harmful substances and water vapour. By law, all cars sold in Europe since 1993 have had to be fitted with catalytic converter.
Why are they a target for thieves?
Catalytic converters can be expensive to replace, but they are required to keep a car road-worthy. This means that as cars get older and their value decreases, the cost of a replacement unit might become prohibitive. We have found that complete catalytic converters have been stolen either to keep older cars on the road, or for their scrap value (they contain precious metals such as rhodium, platinum and palladium)
Reduce The Risk - What I can do to protect my car?
We’ve taken action in response to increased theft by developing Catloc. Available since January 2019, this is a device aimed to deter opportunist thieves, designed specifically for the second generation Prius. Catloc protects the components at each end of the catalytic converter. It’s made of marine-grade stainless steel, so it’s strong and durable. It’s attached with anti-tamper fixings and comes with a marking kit that chemically etches a unique serial number into the catalytic converter. Its quality is reflected in the fact it has been included in the International Security Register, approved by UK police and accredited by Thatcham Research, the official research centre for the motor insurance industry.
How much does the Catloc cost?
Depending on your vehicle model, the Catloc costs between £189 - £259 supplied and fitted, and comes with five-year warranty for your peace of mind. To order simply contact your local Farmer & Carlisle dealership below to confirm pricing and next available fitting appointment.
