Making Action Homeless More Mobile
Farmer & Carlisle Toyota supports Action Homeless with donation from the Toyota Fund for a Better Tomorrow.
Local Leicester charity Action Homeless is the latest good cause to benefit from the Toyota Fund for a Better Tomorrow, receiving £2000 to help purchase a vehicle for their foodbank.
Action Homeless is a local charity (no.702230) and social enterprise committed to improving the lives of people affected by homelessness. They have been based in Leicester for over forty years. Last year alone, they provided emergency housing and specialist support to over 400 people and emergency food to 3000 individuals. (Source)
The charity’s food bank is open five days per week and helps people and families in crisis. Tim Adkin from Action Homeless said “This is only one element of our charity, but a really important one. I believe that if we are able to alleviate the stress of looking for / purchasing food it leaves people with time and energy to try and focus on getting other parts of their lives in order such as housing. And in the cases where people have been given accommodation, it means that they don’t have to worry about going hungry, whilst they are supported into a more stable situation”.
The food bank survives only on donations. The charity receives regular phone calls from local Leicestershire companies and residents wanting to make donations but can’t physically get it to the bank. This is where the idea of a vehicle came from. Action Homeless wanted to welcome every single donation, even if it meant going and picking it up themselves.
Action Homeless approached Farmer & Carlisle Toyota to buy a van. Tim met with Kirstin from our Fleet department. He told her all about the charity and how useful a refrigerated van would be. Kirstin worked closely with Tim and Toyota UK to help arrange funding from Toyota, to pay for part of the van. She also managed to persuade refrigeration suppliers CoolKit to provide a refrigeration unit at cost price. Kirstin said “Upon meeting Tim and hearing about Action Homeless I just wanted to help. I knew this van would enable them to collect and provide more food and a better variety of food. This van would make it possible to help even more people; and that to me was really important and worth going the extra mile”.
Due to the refrigeration in the van and very loyal volunteers, Action Homeless are now able to accept every single donation that comes their way regardless of location. They can now provide chilled food items to their members too (which is a rare offering for a food bank) and lot’s of fresh fruit and vegetable.
Tim said “We are thankful to Kirstin at Farmer & Carlisle, Toyota UK and CoolKit for helping us to purchase our van in such an economical way. It has become a valuable asset and has already helped us to help so many more people”.
John Carlisle, Farmer & Carlisle chairman said “I was so humbled to hear about Action homeless and everything that they do. I am proud of Kirstin and the rest of my team for looking after them and really making their experience with us special. Action Homeless do such an important job for the local community, I am thrilled that we could help in the process of making them more mobile”.
