Day 3 | Total wash out

When I say total wash out, I am obviously referring to the weather on Day 3 of my All New Toyota Corolla 1.8 Design Hybrid Hatchback long term test.

Today, I was planning to take the car out for a much longer drive than I managed to, so I could put my foot down a little. I particularly wanted to play with the different modes to see how different driving styles affected the fuel economy.

I did manage to get out for a spin: this could have very easily been a tail spin in some other vehicles that I could mention. So, I’m afraid to say that the weather threw a real spanner in the works.

Not only were there bouts of torrential rain, but it was really windy. I did attempt to film my journey but soon realised that my eyes were needed on the road, without added any added distractions.

New Corolla Hybrid takes on torrential rain and high winds

I took the Corolla out on a local A Road, which is very busy - it is a major transportation route for large trucks and lorries. There was a massive amount of splash back water; this can be quite scary, even for experienced drivers who find themselves caught out by nasty flash-type floods like the ones I experienced today.

Although I arrived home in a rather soggy, windswept, bedraggled and very tired state, I can’t blame the Corolla at all. It was solid, incredibly sturdy and felt very grounded, sticking to corners and coping valiantly with the slippery road surfaces.

Note: The dogs seemed relieved when I returned home to record my findings ready to upload to Day 3’s Vlog. They did try to get in on the action as you may have noticed if you have watched it (I did promise you random dogs as part of this project and I would hate to let anyone down).

Day 3 | Verdict

I can honestly say that this kind of weather is probably my least favourite of all to drive in. I hate it when the rain is pelting down so heavily it’s hard for the windscreen wipers to keep up (they did do, by the way - the automatic wiper function was a godsend) and when you are driving past vehicles that are so huge, they compound the problem.

Even though I was thinking that today was a real wash out, being as my Day 3 motoring plans were scuppered, it worked out very well.

Because now I can say - with my hand on heart - that this innovative mid-size hybrid Hatchback really CAN stand its ground in very poor driving conditions.

I’m now beginning to wonder if driving a larger vehicle is REALLY necessary in order to feel safe when coping with the many kinds of unruly and often unexpected weather conditions that the UK is so famous for.

This may well be the car that’s converted me - the ‘SUV fan’. Of course, it hasn’t put me off sports utility vehicles, but I would now certainly consider driving a smaller vehicle on a more permanent basis if it was on par with the quality of the All New Toyota Corolla Hybrid Hatchback.

And I don’t say that lightly. You heard it here first.
