Day 4 | Country roads and driving in the dark
Every Thursday, I take my eldest son to football practice. Training takes place at a location reached by driving down winding and rather uneven country lanes and as it starts at 7pm, at this time of year, it is a ‘driving in the dark’ journey.
I was interested to see how the All New Corolla handled on uneven roads, and I wanted to check out the effectiveness of the Automatic High Beam feature that is included as part of the standard Toyota Safety Sense package.
Toyota Safety Sense also comes with an excellent Pre-Collision System that detect pedestrians that are in the vehicle’s car’s path, as well as cyclists during daylight hours. Lane Departure Alert and Adaptive Cruise control are also fitted, which is excellent news for motorway drivers and anyone who is keen to save fuel when they find themselves caught in stop-start traffic.
Road Sign Assist is also part of Toyota Safety Sense, which is handy if you find yourself unsure of speed limits in any given area.
New Corolla passes 'kid test' with flying colours
Firstly, if you have watched the accompanying videos to my Day 4 Corolla 1.8 Design Hatchback review, I do have to apologise for my over-excited and enthusiastic 9 year-old son.
His role was intended to be an acting camera-man and commentator but hilarity soon took over so I do hope that - even if it does make you chuckle – you get the bigger picture!
Beau loves the car, the comfort, the dashboard layout and futuristic design.
He was also amazed at the quiet drive and was keen to show it off to his football-loving pals when we got to the training session (I didn’t record this as there was literally a crowd of over-excited young lads wanting to get in on the act!)

The uneven roads did not pose a problem to the Corolla and as I expected, the drive there was very comfortable indeed.
It wasn’t a ‘bone shaker’ journey; thanks to the sturdy TNGA set-up, it felt safe, sturdy and comfortable.
Visibility was not a problem thanks to the automatic LED headlights and auto high beam, enabling me to have a clear view of the road ahead at all times and pulling in to avoid oncoming traffic in advance – meaning that I didn’t find myself reversing all the way down the lanes as I have done many times before now!
Day 4 | Verdict
As you can imagine, driving my son to evening football training on a very cold March evening in the dark, then standing around for over an hour freezing to bits, isn’t usually the most fun ways of spending my Thursday nights.
Tonight, however, driving the Corolla and recording the journey made it a pleasure – despite Beau’s hyperactivity, we had a good laugh and it was nice to test a car that both myself and my child enjoyed spending time in.
I have yet to take both of the boys out at the weekend, including a much-dreaded trip to the supermarket and a day out involving a motorway jaunt.
Let’s see how the boot accommodates our various requirements, see how comfortable the rear occupants are and perhaps even enrol some additional passengers to test the interior space to full capacity!
Roll on Friday, we are all looking forward to the weekend and our future adventures in the fabulous Toyota Corolla 1.8 Design Hybrid Hatchback.
And you have yet to officially meet my youngest son, Valentine…
