Day 2 | Getting to know you…
Settling into driving a New Corolla Hybrid
Today I focused on getting settled into the Corolla 1.8 Hybrid Design that I have the pleasure of driving for 7 days.
And when I say pleasure, that is an accurate way to describe my thoughts so far on this smooth-running, good-looking, well spec’d and sprightly hatchback.
Getting ready to rock and roll took literally a few minutes. I set up my in-car connectivity with ease (trust me, this is not always the case with many of the cars I drive!) and found a comfortable driving position almost immediately.
The seats are cosseting and the overall quality of the interior is excellent. Gone are the LCD clocks of yesteryear - the New Corolla infotainment system has buttons and dials and a well-laid out, flat 8” screen.
The boot is a good shape; deep, wide and tall with a nice and low load lip. It boasts 361 litres of room when the rear seats are in place - that's almost 20 litres more than the Ford Focus.
Out and about in the New Corolla Hybrid Hatchback
I did get many admiring looks - some of the people I passed were clearly very curious as to what the car actually was, being so new to the market.
However, the signature blue Toyota logo detailing, ‘Hybrid’ badges displayed proudly on the front side quarters and ‘Corolla Hybrid’ emblazoned on the rear of the vehicle should have made the model’s identity clear.
Well, you’d hope so anyway.
Anyway, I was hoping to collar some of the lovely people who work in my local store to find out their opinions on my lovely test Corolla but failed on that score. I must find some unsuspecting folk at some other point over the term of my 7-day road test.
In today’s Vlog, I did harp on about how smooth and quiet the All New Corolla Hybrid is to drive but I do feel justified in doing so, as it really is.

Interestingly, most ‘smooth’ cars I have owned or tested before now haven’t been very engaging as the emphasis is mostly placed on economy.
The introduction of TNGA was a genius move on Toyota’s part.
Toyota have really nailed the New Corolla Hybrid with this new incarnation – it is incredibly responsive and fun to drive.
It is nippy, agile and incredibly grounded: that’s how I would sum it up so far.
All New Corolla 1.8 Hybrid Design Hatchback | safety features and specification
All 1.8 Hybrid Corolla models have dual-zone climate control and every trim has automatic LED lights and heated front seats.
I did forget to mention when I recorded my Vlog that the reverse parking camera is a real boon – this is standard across the whole range. The fabulous Toyota Safety Sense package is also standard; this, in my book, is a good reason to buy an All New Corolla in itself.
Toyota Safety Sense includes pre-collision warning system to detect nearby pedestrians in the day and at night, and cyclists during daylight hours. Adaptive cruise control is included, automatically halting your vehicle when you find yourself stuck in stop-and-go traffic, as is automatic high-beam (I am looking forward to testing this later this week) and road sight assist.
The Design trim boasts funky 17” machined alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, LED front fog lights, automatic folding door mirrors (these are great), rain sensing wipers and there's an option to add a panoramic sunroof if you wish. Smart stuff!
Day 2 | Initial verdict
My petrol tank is still on full, and my mpg today was around 55. Let’s see what tomorrow brings when I get to take it out on the open road.
I will be driving in style in any event. And I will be driving whilst listening to my favourite tracks thanks to the excellent stereo that is, of course, standard. Tinny sound systems are one of my biggest bugbears in a car.
So, guys and girls, I am happy to confirm that the initial Motor Mistress verdict for Day 2 of my Toyota Corolla 1.8 Hybrid Design Hatchback 7-day review is now in.
And it’s very good indeed.
