2019 Toyota RAV4 Design 2.5 Petrol Hybrid 7 Day Test Drive Review Day 2 | First Impressions

We all know that first impressions count. Particularly where cars are concerned, and particularly when the segment that the vehicle in question belongs to is very - almost cripplingly – competitive.

Why choose an SUV?

Like it or not, we have found ourselves in a world where the SUV is King. Many modern buyers are choosing the Sports Utility Vehicle over estate cars, liking the ‘rugged’ styling, high driving position and spacious boot that vehicles in this category offer.

The good news is that our first impressions of the 2019 RAV4 Hybrid were very good. As you will see from my accompanying Day 2 Vlog, the children were very impressed by the look of the vehicle and were eager to head off on our first family outing in this stylish offering from Toyota.

2019 RAV4 | Reinvented for fifth generation as self-charging Hybrid

In recent years, it is fair to say that the appeal of the previous model RAV4 waned when the demand for SUVs became sky-high. Whilst the other models within Toyota’s range evolved, morphing into angular, futuristic-looking vehicles with clever hybrid engines, the RAV4 waited patiently in the wings for its transformation to take place.

Now, the RAV4 has shimmied into its all-new, fifth-generation form, as bright and beautiful as a newly-emerged butterfly. Striking a distinctive silhouette, it certainly does look very different from other SUV offerings; its dynamic look gives it a muscular stance, hinting at the engaging drive that is on offer.

The RAV4 was well-received at Mountford HQ by my mini car-reviewers in residence. The boys particularly liked the ‘camouflage’ colour, ‘the lights’ and they thought it looked ‘cool’. They wanted to go on an expedition in it and do a stake out, but obviously this wasn’t something I was particularly keen on getting involved with.

My 7-day review RAV4 Design 2.5 Petrol Hybrid car is finished in ‘Urban Khaki’. This colour is highly interesting, in fact, I would say that it is a ‘look twice’ colour. It has a lovely subtle sheen and has a green-tint to it; if I was describing it as a colour myself, I would call it ‘pistacho’.

This is complimented by bold black wheel arches, smart running boards with chrome detailing, a strong black front bumper and rear plate, contrast-colour rear pillars and tinted rear windows. Together with the ‘hybrid’ monikers and the blue inset ‘hybrid’ Toyota badge (this was a main talking point), the New RAV4 is a very eye-catching car.

Inside the RAV4 Design Hybrid, it is very roomy. It is a big car.

There is tons of room for the children and plenty of room for the driver. I was very impressed with the centre cabin layout, which had excellent cup-holders (no jamming-in of your Costa’s, here!), a place for keys, smartphones / iPod (with USB charging point) and a lifting middle console that goes surprisingly deep. I will be going into this in more depth in a later review, taking a closer look at boot space and practicality.

RAV4 Hybrid connectivity | setting up in-car tech

Setting off in the RAV4 Hybrid was a breeze. As with my previous seven-day test review vehicle, the New Corolla Hybrid, it was very easy to pair my telephone and iPod to the vehicle; in fact, to test this out, I tasked my eldest son, Beau (9) with this job.

And he did it. In seconds. Child’s play, indeed!

Well done, Toyota.
