‘Customer buys 31 cars in 40 years’

This year represents an important milestone for Farmer & Carlisle Toyota as we celebrate our 40th Anniversary. To mark this special occasion we are celebrating by talking to customers that have supported us from the beginning.

We interviewed Gerald Cross and Susan Kirk (daughter), Mr Cross alone has bought 31 vehicles from the same dealer – Farmer & Carlisle Toyota Loughborough since 1977.

Gerald Cross and Susan Kirk are both Driving School instructors (Susan Kirk School of Motoring). Gerald bought his first Toyota - a Corolla - from John Carlisle back in 1977.We asked Mr Cross to describe his experience with John Carlisle, he said “He was brilliant, nothing was ever too much trouble for him. There was one car that they hadn’t taken the dual controls out of (we always had them swapped over), so he got his boiler suit on and he was in the workshop taking the dual controls out himself”.

As a driving school instructor Mr Cross depends on his car for his livelihood therefore he needs something reliable, Mr Cross describes his first experience with Toyota “I said to John Carlisle when I bought my first one, now what about some spares, and he looked at me a bit gone out, spares, what do you mean? Well you know I want some spares, I’ve had other makes and always had to have this and that replaced, and he (John Carlisle) said you won’t want any spares with a Toyota. I thought It was just sales talk! Then he said, you know what we’ll do, we’ll make you up a pack like the European pack that you use when you go abroad with bulbs a fan belt and things like that, and, I never, ever, used them! In fact I let somebody else have the fan belt 4 years later. Whatever we’ve had has been nothing to compared to Toyota

Not only do Gerald and Susan enjoy teaching in their Toyota Yaris but Gerald said “The pupils love these cars”, and Susan said “it’s been lovely, we’ve enjoyed having them. One of my pupils said she’s going to go and buy one, a white one the same as mine

Gerald was cynical at first about Toyota’s (but aren’t we all?), he had a conversation with John Carlisle and he said to Gerald “the trouble is once you have a Toyota there’s no return, they’re so good and reliable, you think all of the other cars are the samebut they’re not” Gerald now absolutely agrees!
